The Meeker Chamber of Commerce hosted a Career Fair at the High School gym, April 21st. We Believe it made an impact on our youth’s future!

Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service, Colorado Work Force, Pioneer Medical Center, Rangely Flight Instruction, Colorado Northwestern College, Eastern Rio Blanco Recreation District, White River Electric Association and Meeker Chamber of Commerce were among those who connected with students to offer opportunities and discuss their future. We appreciate each one’s effort to make a difference in our young people!

Included in the speakers were Jim Branch, ExxonMobil Project Executive, Piceance Project and J.D. Estes, External Affairs Advisor, Piceance Project both from Houston, Texas. Colowyo/Rio Tinto was represented by Steve Gili, Mine Manager and Tay Tonozzi, Manager Technical Services. Enterprise representative was Shawn Brennan. EnCana had five employees present including Mike Kennedy, their team leader from Denver and Fred Slagle presenting. Williams presentation was jointly accomplished with Susan Alvillar and Blake Roush.

For the most part, the encouraging thread was that the companies are here to stay. The level of their activity is yet to be determined by the national economy situation but they are committed to doing their part to meet the energy needs of the people.

Following the meeting, several community leaders wondered if quarterly small group discussion on how to ‘partner’ with our energy companies in positive ways could produce some tangible results. If you are interested in this type of informal discussion, contact us!

A big thanks to Scott Pierson, Kari Jo and the Meeker Recreation Center for hosting this event and to our professional trainers, Dondi Glasscock and Stacy Hudelson, Meeker Recreations Center Managers who shared invaluable tips and info on health and fitness to give our members and staff a fresh handle during these winter months. The presentation exceeded our expectations!

The FIVE TIPS FOR A HEALTHIER YOU that were expanded on:

• Get Moving! Schedule exercise, make time before work, over lunch, during work breaks or after work. Don’t make excuses.
• Try Something New! Vary exercise routines to prevent boredom and injuries. Gave tips for overall fitness.
• Exercise At Work! Focus on correct posture while sitting at desk (demonstrated office exercises). Turn routine tasks into exercise opportunities.
• Remember 80/20 Rule! 80% is what you eat; 20% is what you do. “You can’t out exercise a poor diet.”
• Write it down! People who journal stay more motivated and more likely to maintain fitness goals. You can be your own best coach.

A tour of the facility and inspiring possibilities for a “new you” completed the presentation.

Scenic Byway Training – Proved Fun and Rewarding!

These exciting workshops were prepared for anyone that interacts with travelers  to be better educated on this wonderful Scenic Byway that begins in Meeker and winds through the Flat Tops.  The training was offered at Kilowatt Korner on three different days and times to allow each person interested an opportunity to attend. There were also two additional workshops offered in Yampa.  Overall attendance was very good!

• November 18 – 7 pm

PRIZES at each session were passed out.

For the BIG prizes, completed questionnaires are being returned. Remember, if you attended and have a questionnaire, these must be completed and turned into the Chamber by November 25th.
